FTMO
Overview
FTMO is a proprietary trading firm founded in 2015 in Prague, Czech Republic, by Otakar Šuffner and Marek Vašíček. What began as a small trading community evolved into one of the most established prop firms in the industry, built around a structured two-step evaluation model.
Traders who successfully complete the FTMO Challenge and Verification gain access to a simulated FTMO Account with up to $200,000 in allocated capital. The firm places strong emphasis on discipline, consistency, and capital preservation rather than short-term performance spikes. FTMO also maintains a connection with Quantlane, offering a potential progression path for top-performing traders beyond the simulated environment.

FTMO operates on a structured evaluation model that prioritizes consistency, transparency, and clearly defined risk limits. Rather than relying on ambiguous conditions or discretionary decisions, the firm applies a standardized process designed to assess whether traders can maintain discipline under precise and repeatable rules.
FTMO’s evaluation framework is shaped by a set of core principles that influence both its challenge design and long-term trader development:
- Consistency – rewarding repeatable performance rather than isolated results
- Transparency – clearly documented rules and evaluation metrics
- Discipline – strict enforcement of daily and overall risk limits
- Risk Control – emphasis on capital preservation over aggressive growth
- Evaluation – objective, rule-based assessment of trader behavior
- Progression – structured scaling opportunities for compliant traders
- Professional Development – encouraging habits aligned with institutional trading standards
Each principle directly informs how FTMO structures its two-step evaluation process, payout timelines, and trader support systems.

Allowed Strategies
EAs and Automated Trading
FTMO allows the use of Expert Advisors and automated systems, provided they operate under real-market conditions. Latency arbitrage, execution manipulation, or system abuse is not permitted.
Manual, Swing, and Position Trading
Both intraday and multi-day strategies are supported. The evaluation focuses on exposure control and consistency rather than trade duration.
Scalping
Scalping is permitted as long as it reflects genuine market behavior and does not rely on ultra-fast execution or exploitation.
Hedging
Hedging is allowed within a single account. Using multiple accounts to hedge positions against each other is not permitted.
Copy Trading
Copy trading is allowed only between accounts owned by the same trader and within the maximum capital allocation limits.
VPN or VPS Usage
VPN and VPS usage is permitted, provided trader identity and account integrity remain clear.
Trading Around News
News trading is restricted on FTMO Classic accounts but allowed on FTMO Swing accounts.
Restrictions
FTMO applies a strict risk framework designed to eliminate gambling-style behavior and enforce professional trading standards. Breaches of daily or overall drawdown limits result in immediate account failure.
Arbitrage strategies, martingale-style risk escalation, aggressive recovery methods, and execution manipulation are not allowed. Using multiple accounts to bypass capital allocation limits or hedge across accounts is prohibited.
On Classic accounts, trading around high-impact news events is restricted, while Swing accounts remove this limitation. All rules are applied mechanically and consistently, with a clear focus on capital preservation.
Reputation and Trustpilot Reviews
FTMO currently maintains a Trustpilot rating of 4.8 out of 5.
The strong overall rating reflects long-term operational consistency, clear communication of rules, and a predictable evaluation process. Many traders highlight efficient payouts, responsive support, and a framework that operates exactly as described.
Negative reviews, which form a small minority, typically come from traders who failed evaluations or lost funded accounts after breaching drawdown or procedural rules. These reviews rarely question FTMO’s legitimacy and instead focus on the strictness of its risk framework. The contrast reflects a strategy–platform mismatch rather than inconsistent enforcement.
Verdict
FTMO offers one of the most established and structured evaluation environments in the prop trading industry. Its model emphasizes disciplined risk management, transparent objectives, and a predictable framework that has remained stable over time.
The firm is best suited for traders who perform well within clearly defined boundaries and can maintain consistency across both evaluation phases. While its rules may feel restrictive to high-risk or experimental strategies, traders who value structure, rule clarity, and long-term credibility will find FTMO to be one of the most reliable options available.
